The Hazmat toggle can be found within the Quote/Ship tab → General tab → Shipment Details card.
What is Hazmat?
In shipping, Hazmat (hazardous materials) refers to substances that pose risks to health, safety, or the environment during transportation. Regulated by agencies such as the DOT, IATA, and IMDG, hazmat includes items like flammable liquids, explosives, toxic substances, corrosives, and radioactive materials. Shipping these materials requires proper classification, approved packaging, hazard labeling, and documentation such as MSDS and BOL. Only trained personnel are authorized to handle hazmat shipments, ensuring compliance with transport regulations for road, air, or sea to prevent accidents and maintain safety.
Quoting with Hazmat or Dangerous Goods
When quoting a Hazmat/DG shipment, the user must check the Hazmat toggle for each applicable shipment detail line and select a UN ID from the system database using the pop-up window.
Or from the UN/NA ID book, by clicking on the link shown below.
If the account settings display the Description field, the details of the selected UN ID will automatically replace any previously entered value in that field. This is typically used for non-parcel shipments.
Only carriers that handle Hazmat will return rates, and any additional charges will be included in the quote.
Shipping with Hazmat or Dangerous Goods
When shipping Hazmat/DG, the user must select the appropriate UN ID based on the product.
If a Hazmat/DG line is included, the emergency contact fields will appear and must be filled out to process the shipment with all carriers.
If a default contact has been added, it will auto-populate. To add one, click on the Add default Hazmat link found on the Hazmat Contact card in the Quote/Ship page.
To add a new default Hazmat contact, a user can navigate to the Company Details → Settings tab → Hazmat Contacts card and add a new default contact.
If a single UN is added to a shipment detail line, the system will automatically populate the description with the UN ID information, including the UN#, Proper Shipping Name, Hazard Class, and PG. Note that the proper shipping name differs from the description on a UN ID, and this will be printed on the BOL.
Inner pieces within the shipment details can also be marked as Hazmat. When the user checks the Hazmat checkbox for inner pieces, they will need to select the UN ID in the same way as for the outer handling pieces. The description field will be populated based on the selected UN ID as well.
Inner Hazmat pieces can be added by clicking the Inner Pieces button and toggling on Hazmat within the pop-up modal. Then, enter the required information.
If multiple UN IDs or Inner Pieces are used, and one or more of the inner piece lines is marked as Hazmat, the outer handling unit description field will be cleared to prevent any conflict with the Hazmat information from the inner pieces.
The Emergency Contacts will print on the BOL.
The Hazmat Placard Provided and ERG Checked checkboxes apply only to non-parcel shipments and will be printed on the BOL.
These options can be found on the Hazmat Contact card.
How to Access Hazmat Favorites
To access Hazmat Favorites, simply toggle on Hazmat and select the UN/NA ID book (as described above). Once the UN/NA ID book is populated, all added UN/NA IDs will be listed, with favorites displayed at the top of the chart, marked by an orange star. Existing UN/NA IDs can be added as favorites by clicking the white star, or new UN/NA IDs can be created by clicking the Add Favorite button.
The Hazmat modal will appear, allowing the user to quickly search for and select a defined favorite or create a new one.
Selecting any Hazmat option will automatically update the shipment details to indicate:
It’s a Hazmat shipment
Shipment’s UN NA ID#
Product Description (shipping name)
Hazardous Class
PG number
Note: If the Technical Name is populated on a Favorite item, it will appear within the Description in parentheses.
As with all Hazmat shipments, the Hazmat Contact feature will also be displayed once the Hazmat box is checked.
Adding a New Hazmat Favorite
Within the Hazmat Favorites modal, users can create new favorites by selecting the Add New button and entering the following information:
Customer Use ID: The customer’s internal name for readability
Technical Name: The technical ID name
UN #: The mapped UN#
The Customer and Technical IDs can be identical, depending on the end user's preference.
Parcel DG Form
For each UN/NA ID, users can dial in the Parcel DG fields sent to parcel carriers via the Parcel DG form.
When shipping hazmat items, FreightPOP automatically populates the Quantity field in Parcel DG → Shipping based on shipment weight and unit of measure (UOM).
If the selected UN ID uses lb as the UOM and both Weight and Quantity are entered on the shipment line, the system calculates the DG Quantity as the per-piece weight. For weights entered at the line level, the total weight is divided by the number of pieces to determine the per-piece value.
This calculation also applies when:
The UOM is manually changed to lb
The weight type is toggled between per-piece and per-line
If the UOM is set to any unit other than lb, the system defaults the Quantity to 1 and does not perform a weight-based calculation.
Manually entered Quantity values are preserved unless shipment details are updated, at which point the system recalculates the value as needed.
Whenever the Quantity is auto-updated, a snackbar alert is displayed:
“Parcel DG Shipping Quantity has been updated. Check Parcel DG menu for details.”
If weight = per piece
Ex: if qty = 5, and weight per line = 20, then populate Hazmat Quantity as 20
If weight = per line, then calculate the weight per piece by dividing weight by quantity for that shipment details line:
Ex: if qty = 5, and weight per line = 60, then populate Hazmat Quantity as 12
